Dr Phuti Sepuru is a Senior Lecturer in Musicology at UNISA — a jazz pianist, researcher and educator whose work bridges scholarship, performance and community engagement.

Her research focuses on musical identity and stylistic approaches within South African jazz pianism, with a particular interest in practitioner-based research methodologies.

Her journey began at six with the recorder and later classical piano. At the National School of the Arts she was named top Classical Music student in 2004, before earning a Bachelor of Music at the University of Pretoria — majoring in Jazz Piano Performance, Music Education and Music Technology.

She completed a Master's in Musicology (2015) and a Doctorate (2020). Before joining UNISA she lectured in Classical Music and Jazz Studies at the University of Pretoria (2016–2023), and today teaches and supervises across a range of musicological fields while maintaining an active research profile.
